Everything we wish we'd told our first guests — honest, practical, no tourist-brochure spin.
Tonga is unlike anywhere else in the Pacific. It's the only nation never colonised, the only Pacific monarchy still intact, and one of the few places where Sunday genuinely stops. If you've never been, a few things will surprise you. This guide walks through them so you arrive prepared.
Tonga uses the pa'anga (TOP / T$). Rough conversions: 1 NZD ≈ 1.40 TOP, 1 AUD ≈ 1.55 TOP, 1 USD ≈ 2.35 TOP.
This surprises more visitors than any other aspect of Tongan life. The Tongan constitution formally recognises Sunday as a day of rest — and the country takes that seriously. On Sunday:
Far from being a problem, it's one of the most beautiful aspects of Tongan culture. Locals attend church in their best whites, families gather for traditional umu feasts, and the entire island slows to a gentle rhythm. Plan accordingly — don't schedule your big tour day for a Sunday.
Two mobile providers: Digicel and TCC (Tonga Communications Corporation). Digicel has better data coverage across all four island groups; TCC has slightly better voice coverage in remote areas.
Between islands: Lulutai Airlines flies between Tongatapu, Vava'u, Ha'apai, 'Eua and the Niuas. Ferries run but are slow and schedules are unreliable in rough weather.
On Tongatapu: taxis are affordable (~T$10–20 around Nuku'alofa), but having your own vehicle is the easiest way to explore. Our sister brand Tonga Rentals arranges car and scooter hire.
In Vava'u: most accommodation is in or near Neiafu — walkable, with taxis and rental scooters readily available.
Drive on the left. Speed limits are slow (50 km/h in towns, 70 km/h open road). Watch for pigs, dogs, and chickens on rural roads.
Tonga is deeply Christian and culturally modest. A few small adjustments will earn huge goodwill from locals:
Tonga has two seasons:
Packing essentials: lightweight clothes, a rain jacket year-round, sturdy sandals, reef-safe sunscreen, mosquito repellent, a hat, and a dry-bag for boat days. Evenings can be cool in dry season — bring a light jumper.
Most Commonwealth, EU, US and other visitor nationalities get a free 31-day visa on arrival. You'll need a valid passport (6+ months), onward ticket, and accommodation proof. Full visa info →
Tongan cuisine leans heavily on fresh seafood, taro, cassava, and coconut. A few dishes worth seeking out:
Minimum: 5 nights. Tonga is not a quick stopover country — getting to different island groups takes half-days, and the Sunday rule eats into short stays.
Sweet spot: 7–10 nights. Enough time for Tongatapu (2–3 nights), Vava'u (4–5 nights), and perhaps Ha'apai or 'Eua (2 nights).
Deep dive: 14+ nights. If you're here for whale swims, diving, or photography — give yourself time. Weather shifts, and having flexibility means you catch the best conditions.
