When Is the Best Time to Swim with Whales in Tonga?
Month-by-month breakdown of whale season — when to book for mother-calf pairs vs heat runs.
Tonga is one of only a handful of countries on earth where swimming with humpback whales is legal. Licensed local operator. Small groups. Unforgettable.
Every year from July to October, thousands of humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to Tonga's warm waters to breed, calve and nurse their young. Tonga is one of the few places on earth where swimming with them is legal, regulated, and done responsibly.

Whales dictate the schedule. Some days we find them in minutes; other days we search longer. The ocean writes the timetable.
Tonga's whale swim industry is regulated by the Ministry of Tourism under strict licensing requirements. We only partner with operators who follow the code of conduct in full — because the experience is meaningless if it harms the whales.
Peak season is August and September. July is the start (fewer whales but less crowding), October is the tail end (more playful juveniles, cooler water). All months in-season are worthwhile.
You need to be comfortable in open water with a snorkel. You don't need to dive or hold your breath for long — most encounters are surface-level. If you're anxious in the ocean, tell us — we can put you in a private charter where the pace is yours.
In peak season (August/September) we sight whales on roughly 95% of trips. We can't legally guarantee in-water encounters because we follow the code of conduct — some days the whales aren't in a receptive mood, and we don't force contact. Most operators (us included) offer a free return trip if you don't get in the water.
Minimum age is typically 8 years old for in-water swimming, with a confident swimming ability. Younger kids can come aboard as observers. Ask us about family-friendly private charters.

3–6 months ahead for August/September. Operators have strict daily passenger limits, and peak-season dates sell out. Shoulder season (early July, late October) can often be booked 4–6 weeks out.
