Country-by-country visa requirements for visiting the Kingdom of Tonga — updated regularly by our local team.
Tonga offers one of the most visitor-friendly visa regimes in the Pacific. Most travellers from Commonwealth nations, the EU, the US and many other countries receive a free 31-day visa on arrival — no application, no advance fee, no complicated paperwork.
This page summarises what you need, by nationality. For anything out of the ordinary (long stays, business visits, residency), contact us directly or reach out to Tonga Immigration.
Citizens of these countries receive a free 31-day visitor visa stamped into their passport upon arrival at Fua'amotu International Airport (Tongatapu).

If you want to stay longer than 31 days, you can apply for an extension of up to six months total (including the initial 31 days). Extensions are handled by Tonga Immigration at their Nuku'alofa office.
Requirements:
We handle extensions on behalf of clients — you drop off your passport, we run it through Immigration, you collect. Usual processing time: 3–5 working days.
Citizens of some countries must apply for a visa before arriving in Tonga. If you're from one of these regions, contact Tonga Immigration or a licensed visa consultant well in advance:
Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks via the nearest Tongan High Commission (Auckland, Suva, Canberra, Tokyo or London) or an authorised Tongan embassy.
Coming to Tonga for work, NGO volunteering, or extended business? You'll need a different visa class:
For meetings, conferences, investor visits, short-term consultancy. Valid up to 90 days. Requires sponsor letter from a Tongan business or government entity.
Required for all paid employment. Must be secured by your Tongan employer before you arrive. Processing: 4–8 weeks.
For NGO volunteers on approved programs (VSA, Peace Corps, church missions, etc.). Usually arranged through the sponsoring organisation.
Tonga does not have a formal retirement visa, but repeated 6-month visitor extensions are possible. For permanent residency, you'll need significant investment or Tongan heritage.
Immigration policies are updated regularly. This page is our best-effort summary as of 2026, based on public Tonga Immigration information and our day-to-day experience handling visitor visas. It is not legal advice.
